According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 33 men will report an incident where they were raped in their lifetime. Not to make light of a serious subject, but are these men in jail or out? Since it’s reported, does that meant they went to the police and sat down and filled out a report? Do they take a swab of anything? I really can’t imagine how that might go.

On a more serious note, 1 in 6 women report being raped or sexually assaulted once in their lifetime. To help battle this, April is sexual assault awareness month. So what can you do to protect yourself?

First, as Oprah would say, trust your instincts. If it’s late at night and you have to walk to your car and you have a bad feeling about it, don’t go–trust your instincts. Any other time, have a friend walk with you. Try to stay out of dark areas and be on the lookout–be aware of your surroundings. Carry mace and have it ready. Don’t be shy about asking security to escort you if the service is available. Once you are home, be sure the garage is closed before you get out of your car–and still be on the lookout for danger. Don’ think just because you are home nothing can happen. Remember those home security commercials where the ex-boyfriend breaks in? This is just a partial list to get you started. Above all else, err on the side of conservative. It’s better to get there late in one piece than not get there at all.
